Three Forts Challenge - Sunday 3rd May 2026

The Best Running Event for Miles!

Huge thanks to everyone who participated in 2025....wow what a day!

Three races to choose from

Full Marathon

Starting and finishing at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre, the course is renowned for its demanding terrain, featuring steep climbs, stiles, and rough tracks underfoot. Runners will face the extra challenge of this marathon being slightly longer than the traditional 26.2 miles, as the route adds an additional mile. The journey takes runners past iconic landmarks such as Chanctonbury Ring and Cissbury Ring, where they can enjoy panoramic views across the countryside.

In addition to the physical challenge, the marathon has a strong charitable focus. All profits from the race goes to Ferring Country Centre and other local charities, a charity that supports and trains adults with learning disabilities. By taking part in this marathon, runners not only test their endurance but also contribute to a cause that has a meaningful impact on the community.

Half Marathon

The Three Forts Half Marathon is a challenging yet scenic race that takes runners through the stunning South Downs in West Sussex. Starting and finishing at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre, the course offers a unique blend of rugged terrain, steep climbs, and picturesque views. As you head northwards, the route takes you through the heart of the South Downs National Park, with a significant ascent towards the historic Chanctonbury Ring, a prominent Iron Age hill fort that provides panoramic views over the countryside.

This half marathon is not for the faint-hearted, as the course demands both physical endurance and mental toughness. The trail includes stiles to navigate and rough tracks underfoot, making it a true test of agility and strength. However, for those who love trail running and enjoy immersing themselves in nature, the Three Forts Half Marathon offers a rewarding experience. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a first-time participant, the combination of challenging climbs and breathtaking scenery makes this event an unforgettable journey through one of England's most beautiful landscapes.

Five Mile Trail Run

The 5 Mile Trail Run at the Three Forts Challenge offers a fantastic opportunity for runners of all abilities to experience the beauty and rugged terrain of the South Downs. Starting and finishing at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre, this shorter yet equally demanding route takes participants through a scenic mix of rolling hills, rough tracks, and grassy trails. The course offers a taste of the South Downs’ natural splendour, with challenging sections that require both agility and endurance, making it a great introduction to trail running or a perfect shorter challenge for more experienced runners.

Despite its shorter distance, the 5 Mile Trail Run is still a test of strength and determination. Runners will navigate undulating paths, climb gentle hills, and enjoy sweeping views across the countryside. Whether you're looking for a competitive race or simply want to enjoy a trail run in a stunning setting, this event provides an exciting experience. Plus, with all profits from the race goes to Ferring Country Centre and other local charities, a charity that assists adults with learning disabilities, every step taken helps make a difference in the local community.

Why not run with your dog?

The Three Forts Challenge welcomes runners who want to take on the course with their canine companions! Every dog taking part will receive a prize. If you’re planning to run with your four-legged friend, please ensure you comply with Canicross regulations to keep both you and your dog safe and comfortable throughout the race. History

The Three Forts Challenge (3FC) was established in 1977 as the 'Three Forts Marathon' by Southdowns Orienteers and was organised as an annual race until 1987. In 1988, Race Director, Mike Airey, organised the event for his local running club, Portslade Hedgehoppers. In subsequent years, other local clubs joined the annual race around the Iron Age Forts.

In 2004, a team of Rotarians from the Worthing area joined Mike and have managed the 3FC since. The event evolved from a low-cost race for 50-100 runners into a double event, including an alternative half marathon. The name was changed to the Three Forts Challenge, and funds raised were directed towards Rotary Club charities, attracting up to 800 participants each year. The marathon route was extended by a mile, making it an ultra event at 27.2 miles over a tough, hilly course.

Besides being a challenging event for runners, the 3FC has raised substantial funds for local charities, including St Barnabas Hospice, Shoreham RNLI lifeboat fund, and currently, Ferring Country Centre, a local, independent charity providing training and work experience for people with learning disabilities. Participants develop better work and social skills by assisting with the operation of the Riding Therapy Unit, Garden Centre, Rangers Café, and Dales Farm. Over the years, the 3FC has raised approximately £125,000 for charity.

Unfortunately, the 3FC 2020 had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation, but it restarted in 2021 with Covid-safe arrangements in place.   In 2023, we introduced a 5-Mile Trail Run for those preferring a shorter distance but still wanting the challenge of the hills, which has become a popular addition to the event

The Three Forts Challenge is growing bigger and bigger, and for 2025, the new start/finish will be at Lancing Manor Leisure Centre. In organising the 3FC, we closely follow advice from UK Athletics and gain experience from events such as the London Marathon as well as cross-country trail runs in the area.

We look forward to welcoming you to the best running event for miles!
